Wendy Vander Veen.jpg

Hello, everyone,

My name is Wendy Vander Veen, and I am studying to become an English teacher for middle or high school. This summer has been very busy with projects and papers at KSU, but this is going to be the perfect way to end the semester. I am looking forward to writing with you! Please make comments or suggestions as I post here.

Thanks,
Ms. V

Six Word Memoir:

Put a little paint on it.

Rambling Autobiography:

The sunflowers are droopy. Wow, they didn’t last long. Flowers never do. Oh, how I needed them though, that day, that downer of a day. Ugh. It had been coming for a while, years in fact. But, you know how you can know something is coming and you still get surprised anyway? Like, when I was younger and knew my brother was home, but he came up behind me and scared me to death, usually producing a scream and a slap. Or when you hear the music in a movie and you know it is going to get to the crying part any second, and you swear you won’t cry, but you do? That was the downer day. I took a selfie just so I could mark it and move on. I wish I had worn make up.

Camera Piece:

Forever encased in stone, a squirrel runs up the trunk, right past the crack from the winter’s frigid cold. The bowl’s scalloped edges have a weathered, ancient feel, like the Roman statues that no one has bothered to wash, which is true here as well. Only the overflow splashes and tiny bird feet make its acquaintance, with the occasional nomadic journey of a bug. The crumpled leaves and fallen straw make for a precarious foundation, but this solid piece stands erect for now, inviting eyes and wandering minds.
